Designer Spotlight: Jen Harkavy

Meet this month’s featured interior designer, Jen Harkavy of J. Harkavy Interiors.  This feature is extra special because we partnered with Jen to help design our new home…the home all of Cailíní Coastal’s photos are taken in.

Jen is a native New Yorker turned Angeleno and while her design projects reflect a variety of styles, her classic coastal décor style is what had us eager to work with her!  She started her eponymous design firm just a few months ago and has quickly become a highly in-demand designer...we feel so lucky to have been able to work with her.

CC: How did you get your start as a designer?

JH: Interior Design is my second career, but has always been my passion. I started design school while living in New York City at 25 and most recently here in LA at the Otis School of Art and Design. Waterleaf Interiors in Manhattan Beach is where I got my start. I had an opportunity to work for Jill Johnson, one of the two incredibly talented principal designers and owner. I will be forever grateful for that experience.

CC: In one line, what is your signature design style?

JH: Hard question! The project itself often drives my aesthetic. I love to create livable, layered spaces that are timeless and personal, incorporating vintage pieces with new.

CC: What are your favorite types of design projects?

JH: It’s all about the client! Design is a partnership, which requires trust. I love when my clients allow me the freedom to get my creative juices flowing. A full transformation is always my favorite as it is incredibly rewarding to see the impact. I have a love affair with wall-coverings as well!

CC: How can our customers achieve the designer look at home themselves?

JH: Décor and accessories! Investing in high quality pillows with complimentary patterns and colors can elevate a room. Thoughtfully placed accessories are a great way to get that “designer- finished” look. Pinterest is a great go to for inspiration.

CC: What is one of the most consistent design mistakes you see your clients making?

JH: Understanding scale and proportion is key when it comes to interiors.  A rug or light fixture that is too small or can throw off the balance of the entire room.

CC: How do you like to incorporate home accents in your design projects?

JH: During the installation day, I take everything off the existing furniture and then mix in with the decorative objects I bring along with me. Every installation incorporates plants and/or fresh flowers. Cailini Coastal is where I go for beautiful ginger jars and oversized vases.

CC: What types of home accents do you find to be most transformational to a room?

JH: Artwork is one of my favorite elements and can set the tone for the overall feeling in a room. A statement chandelier can also be totally transformative.

CC: What are your favorite Cailíní Coastal finds and how would you style them?

OVERSIZED SOUTHAMPTON BOWL
I love to place this piece in the center of a round dining table filled with moss balls, where the contrast of the green really brings out the beauty of the pattern.

Beautiful, colorful designs. Her 8 x 10" prints look great styled on a bookshelf or nightstand vignette. I love them so much that I had a piece commissioned for my design studio.

The shape of this vase is great. I love to finish an installation with fresh flowers and most recently styled this for a client’s living room full of blue and white hydrangeas.
